Raw citation counts have always been a poor quality signal, because a paper cited two hundred times as an example of what not to do counts the same as one cited two hundred times as foundational. Classifying citation intent is a small idea with an outsized effect on how you read a reference list.

Where It Is Used

  • Checking whether a finding has been replicated or contradicted
  • Assessing citation context before relying on a paper
  • Identifying retracted or heavily disputed work

Limitations Worth Knowing

Citation classification is itself a model output and misclassifies, particularly with hedged academic phrasing. Coverage depends on full-text access, so paywalled citing papers may be absent from a profile without that absence being visible.
