Overview
Psychiatry is exploring AI for mental health screening, symptom tracking, risk prediction, and administrative efficiency. Applications are still maturing, with significant attention to bias, privacy, and the limitations of behavioral AI.
Psychiatry has almost no authorized AI, and the reason is the hardest problem in this field: there is no reference standard to train against.
A radiology model learns from images labeled by pathology results. A psychiatry model would have to learn from diagnoses that are themselves clinical judgments with substantial inter-rater variability. When the ground truth is contested, a model can only learn to reproduce the contest.
The devices that did get through went around the problem
The authorized examples are both autism diagnostic aids in young children, and both work by producing a measurement rather than a judgment ... one from structured multi-source behavioral data, one from eye-tracking of attention to social stimuli. Neither attempts to replicate a clinical diagnosis directly. They measure something objective that correlates with it.
That is the pattern to expect in behavioral health generally: measurement first, and diagnosis left to the clinician.

Where The Evidence Actually Stands
Both authorized devices are indicated for narrow age bands and return an indeterminate result at rates that are not small, and those children still need specialist assessment. The wider literature on language-model-based mental health tools is almost entirely unregulated and largely unevaluated. The bottleneck being addressed is specialist waitlists, which is a real problem, but a diagnostic aid that shortens a waitlist is doing something different from a device that improves diagnostic accuracy.
