Ambient Clinical Documentation
Also called: ambient AI, AI scribe, ambient scribe
Software that listens to a clinical encounter and drafts the note, currently the highest-adoption category of AI in physician workflows.
Ambient documentation captures the conversation between clinician and patient and generates a structured note for review and signature. It is generally not regulated as a device because a clinician reviews and signs the output.
Adoption has been faster than any other clinical AI category because documentation burden is universally felt and the benefit is immediately measurable in time.
Where This Gets Misread
The draft reflects what was said, not what was meant, and it will record a misstatement confidently. Note quality degrades with background noise, multiple speakers, and language switching. The time saving also depends on the draft needing light editing ... a note requiring substantial rewriting costs more than dictating from scratch.
