Narrow AI
Also called: weak AI, task-specific AI
A system competent at one defined task and nothing else, which describes every AI system currently used in medicine.
Narrow AI contrasts with the hypothetical general intelligence of science fiction. Every authorized medical AI device is narrow: it does one thing, on one data type, for one clinical question, in one population.
Where This Gets Misread
The word "intelligence" implies transferable competence that these systems do not have. A model that detects intracranial hemorrhage with high accuracy has no concept of the patient, cannot recognize that it is looking at the wrong body part, and will return a confident result on an abdominal CT. Narrowness is not a stage the field is passing through, it is what the current technology is.
