PACS
Also called: picture archiving and communication system
The system that stores, retrieves, and displays medical images, and the integration point where most imaging AI is deployed.
A PACS is the imaging equivalent of an EHR. Most imaging AI runs against the PACS, receiving studies as they arrive and returning results into the radiologist's worklist or viewer.
Where This Gets Misread
Integration is where imaging AI deployments actually fail. A model with excellent published performance that does not surface its result inside the radiologist's existing workflow does not get used, and the integration effort is routinely underestimated relative to the model evaluation it follows.
